ES IST UM DIE ZEIT consists of three programs to aid with
learning about time and measurement in German. The program requires
an IBM or IBM-compatible computer using DOS version 2.0 or later,
256K available memory and a EGA or VGA graphics card. Because of
the extensive use of graphics in two of the programs, the speed of
the program is relatively slow and a 286-AT computer or better is
recommended.

LICENSE AGREEMENT
ES IST UM DIE ZEIT is offered as shareware. Shareware is not
free software, but is a distribution system whereby the user is
free to try the software before buying. You are free to copy this
program for your own use and copy it or load it onto bulletin
boards. Shareware vendors may distribute this program to others for
a modest distribution fee (up to $10) as long as all program and
data files remain intact (all files are on the archived file -
uhrshare.exe), but the author retains all rights to the program.
Please understand that the program is not free and is not in the
public-domain. After a reasonable time, if you are regularly using
the program at home or in the classroom, you are expected to
register it by purchasing a registered copy for $19.95. You will
then receive a copy (either 3½" or 5¼"), a site license allowing
you to produce multiple copies for your work or home, and a manual
reader to aid in reading the on-line manual .
Note to German Teachers: One registered copy is expressly
considered a site-license. This is done to increase the usefulness
of the disk for educational purposes. If you have access to an IBM
computer lab, you may then legally make multiple copies of this
program for all your students to use on multiple computers. You may
even let students take the program home and use it there. You may
write (or have your students write) files to practice the
vocabulary you are currently working on in class.
UNCONDITIONAL LIMITED WARRANTY
Es ist um die Zeit diskettes are guaranteed to be free from
defects in materials and workmanship. Disks, which are returned to
me, will be replaced, no questions asked, with the most current
version of the program. The warranty will be limited to
replacement of the physical diskettes and shall not encompass other
damages, including but not limited to loss of profit, special,
incidental, consequential, or other similar claims. The user
accepts the program "As Is" in lieu of all other warranties and
conditions, expressed or implied.
Copies which are obtained from shareware vendors or bulletin
boards are out of my control and the user agrees to accept these
programs "As Is" in lieu of any warranty or condition, expressed or
implied.
INTRODUCTION
Es ist um die Zeit is a new series of programs of a slightly
different type. The computer is used primarily as a discovery
tool. Rather than the computer asking the questions and the
student giving the answers, the student has the questions and the
computer gives the answers. The registered version of Es ist um
die Zeit comes complete with three menu-driven programs, and a
manual. The programs incorporate simple animation and graphics and
require an IBM or IBM-compatible computer with a graphics monitor
(at least a 286 AT-computer and CGA color monitor recommended).
Es ist um die Zeit includes:
Wie spät ist es?: Explore the German way of telling time using an
animated cuckoo clock. After the student is sufficiently
acquainted with the necessary vocabulary and concepts through self-
discovery, he or she can test themselves using one of two modules:
Stell die Uhr! - given a time in German, set the clock to that
time by pushing the appropriate function keys.
Wie spät ist es? - Type in the time indicated on the clock.
Kalender: The program is a perpetual calendar which can be set to
display any month from January 1600 on. It can be used to learn
about and practice the days of the week, months of the year,
birthdays, historical events, and future events. For example, most
students do not know what day of the week they born on. The
computer can determine that in a flash.
Convert: The United States is the only industrialized nation in the
world not to use the metric system. Germans use the metric system
almost exclusively, so it is instructive for American students to
know information about themselves in the metric measurements of
meters, liters and kilograms as well as feet, gallons, and pounds.
Convert is a tool to make these conversions simply and easily.
Getting Started:
1. Es ist um die Zeit is distributed on a single archived
file which will first have to be "unzipped".
To install Es ist um die Zeit on a hard drive.
C:\>md\zeit - make a new directory on the hard drive.
C:\>A: - switch to the drive which contains the
shareware disk.
For shareware versions not obtained directly from me:
Most shareware vendors currently sell programs which use
PKWARE's .zip standard. To unzip the program, you will have to
have a copy of PKUNZIP, which is available from the large on-
line services, or any number of shareware vendors.
C:\ZEIT>copy a:uhrsha.zip c:
C:\ZEIT>cd\pkware <- subdirectory containing pkunzip
C:\PKWARE>pkunzip c:\zeit\uhrsha.zip c:\zeit
C:\PKWARE>cd\zeit
C:\ZEIT>
For the registered version:
The program is distributed as a self-dearcing .exe file (Yoshi
.lzh standard). No program is need to unzip the file, rather
when you run the program it unzips itself. This has beem done
primarily to compress the dictionary so that the entire
program fits onto one 360k disk.
C:\ZEIT>uhrreg c:\zeit - the archived file will then
copy all files from a: to
c:\zeit.
2. To run the program, type:
C:\ZEIT>uhr
3. To print an order form (order.doc), type:
C:\ZEIT>type order.doc >lpt1
or load the file into a word processor and print it using the
word processor.
4. Using Autogrammatik with WINDOWS. Autogrammatik is not a Windows
program and does not require Windows to use. It can, however,
be launched from the Windows interface in Real or Enhanced
Mode without a problem. See your Windows guide for further
details on how to run non-windows programs. An icon
CLOCK.ICO is included on the disk for use with the program.
THE MAIN MENU
Loading a program from the menu:
After the program has loaded, the main menu with appears.
Press any key until the check appears in the box of the program you
wish to work with and then press ENTER. Although the program does
not use a mouse, it is easy to use. The important keys are the
function keys at the top or left of the keyboard, the arrow keys,
and the PgUP and PgDown keys to the right of the keyboard. If a
change is in one direction only, pressing any key on the keyboard
will affect the change.
Special keys active in the main menu:
S = pressing the "S" key on the keyboard toggles the sound of
the cuckoo on and off. This feature is active on the main
menu and while using the program Wie spät ist es.
M = If the disk is a registered copy of "Es ist um die Zeit",
pressing the "M" key will load and run the manual reader.
Help Screens:
Each program come with its own series of help screens to aid in
running the program. The help screens can be accessed by pressing
the function key f1. To exit a help screen, press the ESC key in
the top left-hand corner of the keyboard.
Wie spät ist es?
Description: The program Wie spät ist es? allows you to explore
the German ways of telling time using an animated cuckoo clock.
The program consists of a learning tool and two games. When you
first load the program, a cuckoo clock appears set to the time
which is indicated on the computer's internal clock. By pressing
the function keys, it is possible to set the clock to any time you
wish. Acquaint yourself with the German system of telling time, by
setting the clock to different times and reading the German output
at the right of the screen. When you think you are familiar with
the German time system, you can test yourself using one of two
games:
Stell die Uhr! - given a time in German, set the clock to that
time by pressing the appropriate function
keys.
Wie spät ist es? - type in the time indicated on the clock or
choose the appropriate words to put together
the answer.
How to use the program:
The program is easy to use, since it requires only that you
press the function keys to set the clock to the time you want.
Each function key has a specific purpose.
f1 = Hilfe - is the help screen. Press in order to get quick
information to aid in running the program.
f2 = Was ist? - the fastest way to set the clock to a different
time. Press f2. A little box with the current
time appears in the top right-hand corner.
Notice that the hour is highlighted a light
blue. Use the up and down arrows to set the
hour you want and press ENTER. Now the minutes
are a light blue. Use the arrows again to set
the minutes and press ENTER. The clock then
sets to the time you have entered. In addition
the German for this time appears to the right
of the clock.
f3 = Zurückstellen - pressing f3 set the clock back to the time
indicated on the clock in the computer. Most
computers have built-in clocks. If the time on
the computer is correct, the time on the cuckoo
clock will be also.
f4 = Stunden - press the function key f4 in order to change
the hour on the clock. If a plus (+ ) is
showing in the far right-hand corner the hour
advances one hour each time the function key is
pressed. If a minus (-) is showing the clock
goes back one hour each time the function key is
pressed.
f5 = Minuten - press the function key f5 in order to change
the minutes on the clock. If a plus (+) is
showing in the far right-hand corner the minute
hand advances one minute each time the function
key is pressed. If a minus (-) is showing the
clock goes back one minute each time the function
key is pressed.
f6 = Minuten (+/- 5) - pressing f5 causes the minute hand to
move forward or backward five minutes, depending
on whether a plus or a minus is showing.
f8 = Stell die Uhr! - to start the game Stell die Uhr! See
below for more details.
f10 = Wie spät ist es? - to start the game Wie spät ist es?.
See below for more details.
+/- Pressing the plus or minus keys changes the direction
of the clock goes when the function keys f4, f5, and f6
are pressed. To change the direction, press either the
plus key (Shift-=) or the minus key (-) and notice the
change of the indicator at the top right-hand
corner of the screen. If the indicator shows a plus, the
clock will advance (clockwise) when the appropriate
function keys are pressed. If the indicator shows a
minus, the clock will go backwards.
S = Pressing the "s" key on the keyboard before entering
either of the games will toggle the sound off and on.
If the sound is off, the cuckoo "sound" appears as a
cartoon bubble on the screen.
To type the German letters on the keyboard:
Press the ALT key in conjunction with the vowels a, o, or u, to
produce small umlaut letters (ä, ö, ü). Pressing CTRL in
conjunction with the same letters will produce the capital
equivalents (Ä, Ö, Ü). ALT-s produces ß, the so-called "scharfes s"
or ess-tsett.
Test driving the clock:
After loading the program, the clock appears set to the time
indicated on the computer's internal clock. By pressing the
function keys as indicated above, it is then possible to set the
clock to any time. The German for that time is then indicated
twice to the right of the clock. On top is the official 24-hour
time designation. Below is the colloquial 12-hour form. Once you
are familiar with how the clock works, and the two ways time is
indicated in German, you can test yourself by playing Stell die
Uhr!, or Wie spät ist es?.
Stell die Uhr!
Press the function key f8 to play the game Stell die Uhr!. A menu
appears which asks you to set the format of the game. Choose the
interval to be tested and the type of clock by pressing any key and
then Enter. The following intervals are available:
Stunden - 60 minute intervals
Halbe Stunden - 30 minute intervals
Viertelstunden - 15 minute intervals
Alle 5 Minuten - 5 minute intervals
Alle Minuten - 1 minute intervals
You must also choose between a 24-hour and a 12-hour clock.
Thereafter, a time is written to the right of the clock and the
clock sets itself to 12 o'clock. Press the f4 (hours), f5
(minutes), or f6 (+/- 5 minutes) function keys to set the clock to
the time which is showing. Check the small digital clock in the
right-hand corner to make sure that the cuckoo clock is actually
showing the correct time. Then press Enter. If the time showing is
correct, the cuckoo appears and cuckoos. Otherwise the clock sets
itself to the correct time. Press any key to continue. A running
total of right and wrong answers appears in the bottom left corner.
The exercise continues until twenty questions have been answered or
the ESC key is pressed. Upon exit, an evaluation is given
according to the accumulated score.
Wie spät ist es?
Press the function key f10 to play the game Wie spät ist es?. A
menu appears which asks you to set the format of the game. Choose
the interval to be tested, the type of clock by pressing any key as
you did with Stell die Uhr! and then pressing Enter. The game can
be played two ways. Therefore, it will also be necessary to choose
whether you want to type in the answer (schreiben) or pick out the
words of the correct answer (wählen) when playing the game.
This time the program randomly selects a time and displays it on
the clock and on the small digital clock in the upper right-hand
corner. Your task is to write out the German ways of indicating
this time by either typing the answer if you selected the schreiben
option or by picking out the correct words from a menu if you
selected (wählen).
Schreiben
If you selected schreiben (write) as your option, then start typing
the correct response on the keyboard. There is little room for
variations as the program follows a definite structured format. It
is, however, not necessary to type capital letters, they will
automatically be supplied when appropriate. The German umlauts and
the German ess-tsett are made by pressing the ALT-key and
simultaneously pressing either a, o, u, or s. If the keypress is
correct, the program proceeds. If not, the program beeps and you
have to try again. If you find the format is too difficult or
frustrating, go back to the menu clock and work with it some more
until you are more familiar with the time format expected.
Wählen
If you selected wählen (choose) as your option, a menu of words
appears to the left of the clock. Press any key until the
appropriate choice is highlighted in yellow. Then press Enter. If
the answer is correct, the words of the choice will appear in the
answer blank to the right of the clock and you go on to the next
blank. Otherwise the program beeps and you have to try again.
This option is somewhat easier, because you do not need to type in
the answer, but rather only select the right words in the right
order.
For both games a running score is provided, based on the percentage
of correct keystrokes. If an answer is input without error, the
cuckoo appears and offers congratulations. The exercise continues
until twenty questions have been answered or the ESC key is
pressed. Upon exit, an evaluation is given according to
the accumulated score. Press the f1 function key to get an English
translation of this evaluation.
To end the program:
Press ESC to end the program at any time. It may be necessary to
press ESC several times to return to the main menu or to get back
to DOS.
Kalender
Description:
The program is a perpetual calendar written entirely in German
which can be set to display any month from January 1600 on. It can
be used to learn about and practice the days of the week, months of
the year, birthdays, historical events, and future events.
To load the program:
When the main menu appears, press any key until the cross appears
in the box next to the calender. Then press Enter.
To use the program:
The program is easy to use, since it requires only that you
press the function keys to set the calender to the date you want.
Each function key has a specific purpose.
f1 = Hilfe - is the help screen. Press in order to get quick
information to aid in running the program.
f2 = Was ist? - the fastest way to set the clock to a different
date. Press f2. A box with the current date
appears in the top right-hand corner. Notice
that the day is highlighted a light blue. Use
the up and down arrows to set the day you want
and press ENTER. Now the month is a light blue.
Use the arrows again to set the months and press
ENTER. Finally set the year in the same fashion.
Momentarily the new calender will appear. In
addition the German for this date appears in the
bottom right-hand corner.
f4 = Jahren - press the function key f4 in order to change the
year of the calender. If a plus (+ ) is showing
in the far right-hand corner the year advances
one year each time the function key is pressed.
If a minus (-) is showing the clock goes back
one year each time the function key is pressed.
f5 = Monaten - press the function key f5 in order to change the
months on the calender. If a plus (+) is showing
in the far right-hand corner the calender
advances one month each time the function key is
pressed. If a minus (-) is showing the calender
goes back one month each time the function key is
pressed.
f6 = Tage - pressing f5 causes the calender to move forward
or backwards one day, depending on whether a plus
or a minus is showing.
Unlike the cuckoo clock, there are no games that can be used along
with the calender. Rather, its primary purpose is as a tool to
quickly look up rather inaccessible information.
For example:
What day of the week were you born?
What day of the week was July 4, 1776?
What day of the week will it be on your 40th birthday?
To end the program:
Press ESC to end the program at any time. It may be necessary to
press ESC several times to return to the main menu or to get back
to DOS.
Convert

system almost exclusively, so it is instructive for American
students to know information about themselves in the metric
measurements of meters, liters and kilograms as well as feet,
gallons, and pounds. Convert is a tool to make these conversions

There are conversion tables available for:
Temperature (fahrenheit - centigrade)
Distance (miles - kilometers)
Height (inches - centimeters)
Weight (pounds - kilograms)
Liquid measure (gallons - liters)
Money (dollar - DM (can easily to
reset to exchange current rate))
To load the program:
When the main menu appears, press any key until the cross appears
in the box next to the conversion table. Then press Enter.
To use the program:
Highlight one of the conversion factors and press ENTER.
Immediately tables will appear for the conversion factor you have
chosen. Press the up and down arrows to move to the number you
desire. Press the PgUp and PgDown keys to speed things up and
change the highlighted number at a greater rate. Either the
metric or the American system can be used a the default. Press f10
to change the base for the table. In addition, the following
function keys are active:
f1 - Help screen
f2 - Change the Mark or Dollar to the current conversion
rate.
Ending Convert: Pressing ESC at any time returns you to the main
menu.
I hope you find these programs useful. I would be very happy to
receive comments and suggestions as to how to improve them.

APPENDIX A
German characters: Many word-processors have the capability which
allows them to produce German characters. Even without these
capabilities, however, it is possible to include the German umlaut
letters in the program by accessing the IBM extended character set.
Type the following on the number pad while pressing the ALT key:
ALT-132 produces ä
ALT-142 produces Ä
ALT-148 produces ö
ALT-153 produces Ö
ALT-129 produces ü
ALT-154 produces Ü
ALT-225 produces ß
Typing German letters while using the program Wie spät ist es?,
however, is even easier:
ALT-a produces ä ALT-o produces ö ALT-u produces ü
CTRL-a produces Ä CTRL-o produces Ö CTRL-u produces Ü
ALT-s produces ß
APPENDIX B
What is shareware?
Shareware is a marketing method which offers low risk both to the
authors of quality software and to you - the user. Shareware
programs are fully-functional (not demo) programs which rival
commercial programs, but which have been made available to
shareware vendors, bulletin-boards (BBS's) and computer clubs for
distribution. The distributors then make the programs available to
you for a nominal cost for preview. Shareware programs are not
free, or in the public-domain. The method of distribution is
intended simply to make the program accessible and available for
preview. If you like a program, and use it for an extended period
of time, you are expected to register the program buy usually by
sending a registration fee directly to the author. So, please
register my shareware you continue to use, as this is the only way
I receive any payment for my work. When you register you will also
receive the following:
1) A disk containing latest version of the program,
registered in your name.
2) A site license which allows the registered owner to
make as many copies as needed to be used at one site.
This is particularly useful for German teachers and
schools.
3) Telephone, mail, or E-mail support to help in
installing or operating the program.
4) Notification of new programs and updates.
APPENDIX C
How to Register: An order blank is contained in the file
order.doc. To print the file, type:
C:\AUTOGRAM>type order.doc >lpt1
or load the file into your word processor and print it. If you are
a CompuServe member, you can also register this program by the
CompuServe Shareware Registration Service. GO SWREG and follow the
directions. Es ist um die Zeit is Shareware Reg. #4161. The
registration fee will be automatically charged to your CompuServe
account and you will receive the registered version in the mail in
a few days.
APPENDIX D
Other Programs currently available from Paul Widergren:
A. Wortleiter und so weiter (version 3.12). (SWREG #4160)
Wortleiter und so weiter consists of several computer programs
for IBM-compatible computers to aid in learning German vocabulary
and several important grammar concepts quickly and easily. The
disk comes complete with three fully-developed, menu-driven
programs, a file-creation module, a 7200 word dictionary and 25
sample vocabulary files. The registered version also includes a
on-line manual reader and may include additional vocabulary
files; however, the shareware disk and the registered version of
the disk are not substantially different. Older versions (such
as v. 2.12) of the disk may still be in circulation. Users who
order registered copies will always be sent the most current
version of the program, the data files, and the most updated
version of the manual.
Wortleiter und so weiter includes:
Wortleiter: Learn vocabulary quickly and easily. The disk
contains 25 sample files grouped according to topic (Clothes,
Geography, Animals, Travel). Using the file editor and the
dictionary you can easily make additional files to accompany the
textbook you are using. In addition, numerous variations of the
program can be attempted by resetting the values on the format
screen. 3 levels are possible for each file.
Quiz: Uses Wortleiter files, but this time you have to type the
words in. Either German-English or English-German. Verb files
can also test the principal parts of the verb. 3 levels
possible.
Memory: Select twelve words from one of the files for a
"Concentration"-type memory game using colorful character based
graphics.
The dictionary and file creation module has also been included
in order to make it easy to make new files and edit old ones.
The dictionary includes 7200 words and contains virtually all of
the standard vocabulary to be found in elementary and
intermediate German textbooks. All you need to do is find the
German word in the dictionary, tag it, and then save the
completed file to the disk. Afterwards it is possible to modify
the file and assign levels of difficulty to each word (3 levels
possible).
Registration fee: $29.95 plus $2.00 shipping and handling.
B. Autogrammatik
I. Adjective Endings (SWREG #4162)
II. Passive Voice (SWREG #4163)
Two difficult topics when learning German are adjective endings
and the difference between active and passive voice. The
Autogrammatik series is intended to address these topics with two
easy-to-use programs.
I. Adjective endings: Fill in the correct adjective endings and
receive immediate feedback. The program can be set from easy
(one case / definite article only) to difficult (all cases /
all articles and personal pronouns). An on-line dictionary
and help in the form of charts are available at all time.
This program probably contains the most succinct explanation
of German adjective endings that you will see anywhere!
II. Passive voice: Given either an active or a passive voice
sentence, write the complement. The program can be set from
easy (change verb only / present tense) to very challenging
(change complete sentence / all tenses of the verb). An
on-line dictionary and help is available at all times.
Registration fee: $19.95 each plus $2.00 shipping and handling.
C. Scalae verborum - Latin Word Ladder (SWREG #4164)
A Latin version of Wortleiter is also available. It includes
a 3400 word dictionary which includes almost all of the common
beginning and intermediate vocabulary commonly found in Latin
textbooks.
Registration fee: $29.95 plus $2.00 shipping and handling.
